Bento de Jesus Caraça: The Humanist Mathematician and Resistance Figure

Born in Vila Viçosa to humble beginnings, he became a full professor at the young age of 27.

For him, science did not serve to isolate, but to liberate. Through the Biblioteca Cosmos, he democratized knowledge, bringing culture to the masses out of the belief that an educated people is a free people. His motto was clear:

"If I do not fear error, it is because I am always ready to correct it."

However, his integrity came at a high price. As an anti-fascist resistance figure, he was expelled from the university by the regime and persecuted by the secret police. Despite failing health and imprisonment, he never abandoned his principles, passing away prematurely at the age of 47.

Today, we celebrate his legacy: the proof that the rigor of numbers and the passion for liberty can and must, walk hand in hand.
