At just seventeen years of age, she was already astonishing the learned philosophy professors at the University of Évora with her extraordinary reasoning abilities. Her immense thirst for knowledge drove her even further: according to historical accounts, she even attended the University of Coimbra dressed as a man—an extraordinary feat for the time—in order to study Rhetoric and Metaphysics.

Her intellectual brilliance so deeply impressed her master, André de Resende, that the news of her prodigy quickly spread throughout the cultural circles of Spain, France, and Italy. Later, after spending time at court, she would eventually devote herself to a religious life, passing away at forty-seven years of age in a convent.

To stand before this bust is, for a brief moment, to celebrate the courage and genius of a woman who left an unforgettable mark on the history of thought in Portugal.
