History

Inaugurated on September 8, 2016, by the Vila Viçosa Municipality, this museum was created to honor the life and work of Apeles Caetano Coelho. Born in the town in 1928, "Master Apeles" dedicated much of his life to his craft, achieving enormous prestige and multiple international awards for the originality and rigorous detail of his historical replicas, particularly those from the 16th and 17th centuries.

The estate, entrusted to the municipality by his son, includes his vast collection—considered by experts to be one of the largest of its kind in Europe—as well as his equipment, molds, and workbenches. More than a simple exhibition of finished pieces, the museum recreates the workshop environment, preserving the manual techniques and ensuring that the legacy of this master craftsman and the art of pewter working endure for future generations.
